Serviço Social Invoca Embaixatriz Leila Ramos na Luta Contra a Seca
The most beautiful woman in the world will help raise awareness about the degradation of dry lands, a problem that affects more than a billion people world-wide.
Miss Universe 2011, Leila Lopes has been appointed Drylands Ambassador for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Speaking in New York on Monday, Lopes says drylands are not wastelands as they can be saved:
"If we can address the dilemma, we can tackle poverty in a meaningful way because every minute we lose 23 hectares of land to degradation. I want us to agree on a goal that will help us to reduce land degradation; rehabilitate more land than is being degraded." (Duration: 24″)
Leila Lopes, who is from Angola, will also participate in activities leading up to the Rio+20 Conference on sustainable development to be held in Brazil this June.
